Afshan Zia Successfully Conducted Pakistan's 1st Interactive Academic Writing Skills Workshop Organized by Global Writers Hub on 23rd June 2012 at Regent Plaza Hotel, Karachi, Pakistan
Life is not a bed of roses. There is a closed door before an open one. Likewise, academic writing is a complex and arduous task which makes it exceptionally rewarding career. International bodies have developed standards, principles and policies to regulate the academic writing process. These regulations are complicated and requires proper guidance to get command on them. Global Writers Hub under the trainer-ship of Ms. Afshan Zia, organized Pakistan's first of its kind workshop on Academic Writing Skills to provide an opportunity to the Pakistani students and professional academic writers to polish their academic writing skills, learn the essence of referencing and avoiding plagiarism.
Ms. Zia, CEO of Global Writers Hub, provided exclusive training to the participants. She guided each participant to correctly identify and successfully resolve all types of referencing, grammar, plagiarism and writing process mistakes. Apart from that, Ms. Zia involved the participants in extensive exercises that aimed to provided hands-on knowledge of the rectifying simple to complex mistakes. Using the methods of individual and group exercises, she strategically developed an environment where all participants were able to learn the basics of writing process, APA and Harvard referencing styles.
The workshop was attended by professional academic writers who are also regular students of Institute of Business Management (IoBM), Institute of Business and Administration (IBA) and Virtual University of Pakistan (VU). Ms. Fouzia Bilal, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Ali & Associates, Pakistan's leading law firm dealing in Intellectual Property Right Laws was the Chief Guest at the occasion. She awarded certificates to the participants for successfully completing one day training workshop.
The workshop concluded with the message that students, researchers and professional academic writers should adopt the standard practices for approaching towards their writing projects or assignments in order to achieve the desired results. The participants observed that there is lack of awareness among instructors who do not discourage the use of illegal copying of others works, instead encourage them. The participants also highlighted that there is no culture to provide hands-on skill training and development opportunities. But, wholeheartedly acknowledged that Global Writers Hub has laid down the foundation of this culture by conducting this first of its kind academic writing skills workshop in Pakistan.
